Rules of computation
In principle, the derivative of a function can be computed from the definition by considering the difference quotient and computing its limit. Once the derivatives of a few simple functions are known, the derivatives of functions obtained from these simple functions by applying elementary operations, such as products, sums, quotients, or function composition, to them can be determined by applying rules for differentiation. This process of finding a derivative is called differentiation.1
